The Batwa were evicted from their ancestral forests in 1991 when the area became a national park. Three decades later they are one of the most marginalised groups in Uganda, with no land, no formal employment and almost no access to healthcare. With St Francis Mutolere Hospital we run an outreach service that covers ante- and post-natal care, HIV/AIDS testing, malaria prevention via mosquito-net distribution, childhood immunisation, tuberculosis detection and nutrition training. Agricultural skill-building gives families a parallel route out of dependency.
